SONG AND DANCE; CULTURE AND TRUTH
“Those who hear not the music think the dancer is mad” – old proverb
NEXT Church is not just “dancing!” We’re “dancing” to the music of HIS heart connecting with ours! The only way I can hear the music and stay in step is to spend time alone with Him and seek that powerful connection with His heart — where the music resides.
Connect with culture? Yes! Imperative for winning the culture! Know the culture? By all means! Jesus actually modeled and commended that practice. However, I dare not think that my connection with, and knowledge of culture gives me authority to affect change in the culture. That is God’s and only HIS specialty.
1 Corinthians 3:6 — “I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but only God makes it grow.”
Behaving otherwise and I am only moved by what I perceive moves the culture, rather than truly hearing what HE longs for HIS music and the “dance” of NEXT Church to say to this culture….to challenge this culture with a message of transformation.

Lord, remind me to listen to the “lyrics” and pay attention to the “dance” of culture only as a means for knowing our audience. But may the “music” and the “dance” that we counter with — though it seem vaguely familiar — be unmistakably different. May it be unmistakably from YOUR heart and may it compel “culture” to connect with Your heart.
